Landfall is a board game I’ve been working on for a few months after getting really bored in a conference. I made a few doodles in the margins of my notes and started creating rules. The final product is fairly different from those initial doodles, but I’m very happy with the results.
The game is my own combination of Tile Placing games and Global Conquest games. I’ve always loved the classic take over the world board games, but having the exact same map each time can get dull after a few hundred play-through’s. On the other end of the spectrum are the game boards that you build before play begins, which I love, but game set up can take around a half hour before your actually moving pieces and playing the game.
Landfall is my happy middle ground game. The board is built by players and different each play-through, but the actual board construction is rolled into each player’s turn, making it take far less time away from playing the game.
I kept the art style simple and symbolic for the base set, I focused on game design and ease of play more than anything else. I had to fight the urge to add a ton of rules that would be fun in the long run, but detract from my goal of a simple, relatively quick version of the games that I have enjoyed in the past.
The game has been enjoyed by almost everyone who’s play-tested it with me. I base this enjoyment on whether or not the players wished to play additional games, rather than if they just said ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to liking it.
Landfall is currently available for purchase through the Game Crafter: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/landfall
Additionally, there will be a few expansion released in the next few months for Landfall, and I have at least 2 other games that I’m developing in the mean time. Hopefully those will be fun as well.
